Cry Monster Cry Interview.

I remember looking through the Indiependence line up for the acts playing this year. While I knew I wouldn't be attending the festival, I figured it was a good way to discover some Irish musicians I hadn't previously heard about before. I came across music duo "Cry Monster Cry", consisting of brothers Richie and Jamie. I'm a huge supporter of anything Irish as you know, so I wanted to help them out by writing about them.

The song "Atlas" is particularly good!

You recently played  Indiependence. What's your favourite part of playing festivals and what festival are you hoping to play in the future?

Our favourite part of playing any festival or gig is connecting with an audience. You may have some people there that are familiar with your music and have come to see you, or you have the opportunity to win over some new listeners. Either way it's a great experience. We are excited to play this year's Electric Picnic. We are on Jerry Fish's Electric Side Show Stage on Sunday.

What is the story behind your song, Atlas?

Atlas is a song about dealing with difficult times. We used the metaphor of the weight of the world being on your shoulders and the strengths and weaknesses that that can lead to for a person. It can be a growing experience.

Do you think Irish musicians find it more difficult to make it in countries such as America/UK?

With the internet I think that the world is now a smaller place. Ireland can work as a good home base for a band but they do eventually need to get out on the road. The US is notoriously difficult to break, even for American bands due to it's size and diversity. I guess the flip side is there is an audience there for every band to find. The UK is more similar to Ireland culturally but it's size requires a lot more work.

How would you describe your sound?

Melodic, harmonies, folk and structured.

Any comments on the Irish music industry?

We've been lucky in the support that we've received from the people in this country both in the music industry and in the general public. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to your craft, constantly striving to grow in every aspect to start to see results.

What your aim for the next year?

We aim to keep pushing further afield to reach new audiences and to record and release more music.

What has been your biggest achievement musically, so far?

We recently performed on The Imelda May Show to millions of viewers. It was a special night.
